Potato stamping is a fun activity for kids anytime, but the oval shape the potato makes when cut in half is perfect for Easter eggs.

When I’ve spoken to other parents or daycare providers about this classic Easter activity I’ve noticed that nearly all of them use one of two methods:

  1. the teacher/parent designs and cuts out the potato
  2. the kids draw a design on the potato with marker – which gets the marker really nasty and doesn’t really work very well

I wanted to create a simple solution so that kids could design their own Potato Stamps safely and without getting a whole bunch of potato starch on their markers.

By providing some simple egg-shaped templates for the children to draw their own unique designs on, parents can confidently sculpt stamps out of potato that the kids are going to love.

TIP: If stamping on fabric, be sure to use fabric paint that won’t flake off.

Easter Egg Potato Stamping Supplies

  • Free Easter Egg Design Template (below)
  • Potatoes (we used old ones that were headed for the garbage)
  • Paint
  • Knife and toothpicks (for the parent/teacher)
  • Muffin tin (to hold paints)
  • Paint brushes
  • Cardstock

Tip: Clay working tools also work well to carve the potato. I’ve also been told that microwaving potatoes for 30 seconds helps soften them, however, I didn’t notice much difference.

(Note that adding too much paint to the stamp will result in the design not being clear, so show children how to carefully remove excess paint before stamping.)

Let your designs dry before making into cards.
