Red White and Blue Rice Krispie Treats
What’s inside: A fun Patriotic dessert recipe kids can make for Memorial Day or 4th of July, these Red White and Blue Rice Krispie Treats have a fun layered look and bring a fun, festive touch to your celebrations while having that classic All-American Rice Krispie Treats flavor and crunchy chew.

Patriotic Rice Krispie Treats Recipe
There’s a few classic childhood treats that I will never be grown-up enough to turn down and Rice Krispie Treats are definitely in the top five!
It’s a dessert that truly needs no introduction with their airy crispness and soft, buttery chew. Each bite begins with a light crackle before quickly giving way to a plush, marshmallowy yet gently crunchy texture that practically melts in your mouth. It’s lightly sweet and buttery – even if you don’t enjoy marshmallows on their own, they are well balanced out by the toasted cereal and richness of the butter. (Add a dash and vanilla and it’s even better.)
While you can prepare them on the stove or in the microwave, we opted for the microwave method for these layered red, white and blue rice krispie squares so that the kids can get in on the fun of helping make them.
(Older kids with a bit more kitchen experience can even make these independently!)
And since they still taste great and have an amazing texture up to 3 days after making them, they are a great option if you’re hosting a big BBQ or party, so you can prep these ahead of time.
I hope your family loves this easy patriotic dessert as much as ours did!
— Jennifer

Instructions
To Prep: Grease an 8″ x 8″ casserole dish with cooking oil or butter. Set aside.
- Divide butter and marshmallows into 3 equal parts, and place into 3 separate microwave-safe bowls (approximately 1 teaspoon of butter and 2 cups of marshmallows per bowl).
- Bowl one: microwave for about 40 seconds, stir well and reheat if needed until marshmallows are fully melted. Add in blue gel food coloring and stir until marshmallows are completely blue. Add 2 cups of Rice Krispies and stir quickly until completely combined.
- Pour the blue krispies treat mixture into the bottom of the prepared casserole dish, distributing the mixture evenly. Press down with greased hands or a greased spatula until the treat mixture is level.
- Bowl two: repeat the same process as bowl one, however this bowl will have no food coloring (serving as the “white layer”). When done incorporating in the Rice Krispies, pour the mixture evenly over the blue layer in the casserole dish and press down until level.
- Bowl three: repeats the process as bowl one in the same manner as bowl one but in this bowl you will add red gel food coloring. When you are done mixing Rice Krispies pour out over the first second layer and distribute equally and press down until level.
- Garnish with seasonal sprinkles, if desired.

Prep Tips
- Let sit for 30 minutes or until firm. Cut into 12-16 equal squares.
- Store at room temperature in a sealed container for up to 3 days. (Refrigerating them can make them overly hard.)
- If you want to skip the layering and dying steps, you can opt for seasonal Red White and Blue Rice Krispies – they can be tricky to find, but we’ve linked them for your convenience.
- I like adding a dash of vanilla to my rice krispie treats – if you’d like to add it as well, add after microwaving the marshmallows and butter and stir well to distribute before adding in the rice krispies cereal.
- This recipe can be used for other natural-colored cereals, such as Chex, Cheerioes, puffed quinoa or puffed millet.
