Directions

(makes 2 1/2 dozen pirate flag cookies)

To make the cookies:

In a stand mixer OR large mixing bowl with hand mixer, cream softened butter with sugar until the combination is smooth (not grainy) to the touch.

Add eggs and continue to mix. Then add vanilla and continue to mix.

In a separate mixing bowl, sift together the four, baking soda, and salt. Add this dry mixture to the wet mixture.

Continue mixing to until all ingredients are thoroughly blended.

Once your dough comes together, remove from bowl and form into a ball. Cover dough completely with cling wrap and place in refrigerator for about 6 hours (or overnight). When dough is firm it is ready to bake.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Remove the dough from the refrigerator and allow to soften a bit at room temperature.

Dust a cutting board or work surface with flour. Coat your rolling pin with flour and work flour into your dough to prevent sticking, as needed.

Roll the dough out on the cutting board and using the cookie cutter begin to make your cookies.

Line the cookie sheet with parchment paper or a non-stick silicone baking mat (we love these mats because they are reusable!)

Using a metal spatula to transfer the cut cookies to your prepared cookie sheet.

Bake at 325 degrees for 8 minutes.

Remove from oven and transfer the cookies from the cookie sheet to a wire rack to cool completely. (About 10 minutes).

To make the icing:

In a stand mixer, or large mixing bowl with hand mixer, combine all icing ingredients (except food coloring). Mix on medium speed until stiff peaks form.

Split icing into two bowls. In one bowl, add the black gel, a few drops at a time, and stir until you have reached your desired shade of black. Leave the other bowl of icing white.

Scoop some white icing into one piping bag and some black icing into the second bag. Leave some black icing in the bowl.

Stir 2 tbsp of water into the the black icing that remains in your bowl. Add the thinned black icing into a squeeze bottle.

To decorate:

Using a black edible marker, draw the outline of a torn pirate flag.
