American Flag S’mores Dip Recipe

A fun twist on a classic s’mores, today’s American Flag S’mores Dip combines campfire nostalgia with candy-shop theatrics.

Glossy, melted chocolate is layered with gooey melted marshmallows with crisp, caramelized tops and crunchy sugar crystal coatings. It’s like a little fireworks show for your tastebuds!

While it’s best when enjoyed shortly after baking, with kids and friends gathering around to dip in graham crackers and fresh fruit into the still warm and melty dip, it’s still delicious after setting, though you may need to scoop out your portions with a spoon.

(You can also set on a warming plate to keep the layers melted for a longer period of time.)

This is a fun and super easy recipe to make with kids – and it can be assembled in advance, however the sugars might bleed a bit if made more than a few hours before planning to bake and serve.

This was a really fun way to make a themed dip and I can’t wait to try out this method to make other party s’mores dips – think a Jack O’Lantern dip for Halloween or a Easter Egg themed dip for Easter, etc.

ingredients to make American Flag S'mores Dip: marshmallows, chocolate chips, sugar crystals.

Instructions

To Prep: Preheat oven to 450°F. Fill one bowl with water. Fill two small bowls with red and blue sanding sugar. If desired, prepare a third bowl with white sanding sugar (we prefered leaving the white marshmallows plain for that classic golden s’mores look). Set aside 5 plain white marshmallows.

  1. Skewer one marshmallow at a time with a toothpick and dip it into a bowl of water until fully coated.
  2. Let the excess water drip off, then roll the marshmallow in red or blue sugar. Make 3 blue marshmallows and 8 red marshmallows.
  3. Let all marshmallows sit for 5–10 minutes so the sugar can dry and set.
  4. Using clean kitchen scissors, cut all the marshmallows (coated and plain) in half. Wipe the blades between colors to keep things neat.

5. Pour a bag of chocolate chips into a baking dish and spread into an even layer.

6. Arrange the halved marshmallows cut-side down on top of the chocolate, starting with the blue marshmallows in the upper-left corner to form the “stars” section of the flag.

7. Use the red and white marshmallows to create alternating stripes across the rest of the dish.

8. Bake for 8–10 minutes, or until the marshmallows are puffed and lightly golden on top.

9. Serve warm with graham crackers for dipping and enjoy your patriotic creation!

Prep Tips

  • Lightly wetting the marshmallows helps the sanding sugar adhere evenly, but shake off excess water so the coating stays crisp instead of dissolving into syrupy spots.
  • Work in small batches when coloring so the sugar does not clump or dry out before you finish coating each marshmallow.
  • Let the colored marshmallows fully rest before slicing so the sugar crust sets and gives you cleaner cuts with less smearing.
  • Cut marshmallows just before assembling the dish so the sticky edges stay fresh and help them anchor into the chocolate as they bake.
  • For a true “s’mores dip,” you can also add a layer of crushed graham crackers in between the chocolate chips and marshmallow layers, if desired.
